Overview

Homes for Sale in Centerville, Barnstable, MA

Centerville is a tranquil area on the south side of Barnstable, best known for its prized gem, Craigville Beach.

The town of Barnstable comprises several smaller villages, with Centerville positioned at its core, which explains its name. The Wampanoag people were the first to call it home long before English settlers arrived in 1648. It wasn’t until 1834 that the area began to be known as “Centreville.” Its prime coastal location attracted affluent ship captains who constructed stately residences. The community has maintained its 19th century charm and small-town ambiance over the years with a mix of historic houses and modern waterfront properties.

BEACH PARADISE: Centerville has plenty of pristine bodies of water for coastal relaxation and recreation. The most famous is the Craigville Beach on the south shore. It welcomes everyone, offering public access with a daily parking fee. It attracts crowds eager for boating, beachcombing, and swimming in the warm waters of Nantucket Sound. During the summer, it’s a hotspot for kite surfing, drawing enthusiasts to its waves and sandy shores. Adjacent to it is the residents-only Covell’s Beach, providing a more exclusive and serene experience. It’s a perfect spot for families, swimmers, and those looking to relax by the sea. Centerville is the ultimate coastal paradise with abundant natural wonders within its borders.

LAKE BLISS: The community is also home to the expansive 654-acre Wequaquet Lake, Cape Cod’s largest lake. It is also known as Chequaquet Lake, or Great Pond, and boasts a rich history and diverse ecosystem. With 7.5 miles of shoreline, it is ideal for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. And since it is connected to Bearse Pond and surrounded by other picturesque ponds like Hathaway’s and Shallow Pond, it offers endless opportunities for boating and fishing. Anglers will enjoy reeling in various species, from pumpkinseed and yellow perch to the prized largemouth bass. The lake captures the essence of outdoor leisure and tranquility.

LOCAL ESTABLISHMENTS: While you will love how convenient it is to get everyday essentials, what you’ll appreciate most are the local gems. The 1856 Country Store is the go-to gift shop, offering everything from penny candy and home decor to handmade clothing and unique jewelry. Another is the Four Seas Ice Cream. It is housed in an old blacksmith shop and has been a summer tradition for Cape Cod families and visitors since 1934. Despite nearly 90 years in business, it retains its original diner-style charm. It ranked seventh on the list of Top 10 Ice Cream Parlors in the U.S. and in 2011, Food and Drink Magazine listed it as number sixteen among the top 25 ice cream stories. No wonder generations of vacationers and locals flock here to taste the finest homemade treat. These are unique spots you won’t find elsewhere.
